Fire-rated silicone (or firestop silicone sealant) is a specialized silicone sealant formulated to maintain integrity, resist high temperatures, and prevent the spread of fire, smoke, and hot gases through joints, penetrations, or gaps in fire-resistance rated assemblies (walls, floors, ceilings).
While ordinary silicone sealants provide weatherproofing, sound sealing, or general sealing, fire-rated silicone has additional performance criteria and testing to ensure it contributes to the fire safety of a building.
Firestopping (using fire-resistant materials) is part of passive fire protection: it helps compartmentalize a fire and limit its spread through “weak points” such as penetrations, joints, or gaps.
